N.J.S.A. 39:6A-3.3 refers to an alternative "special automobile insurance policy" for ""eligible low income individual" which has much less coverage than a standard PIP policy. This is also sometimes known as a "dollar-a-day" policy.
Key characteristics of the "special" policy are:
Only available to qualified people (basically, those enrolled in medicaid with hospitalization).
$250k for emergency care, which is defined in the statute.
Covers emergency room costs and death benefit only.
All people on special policies are subject to verbal threshold for their bodily injury claims.
