N.J.S.A. 39:6A-3.1 refers to an alternative "basic automobile insurance policy" which has much less coverage than a standard PIP policy.
Key characteristics of the "basic" policy are:
$15k of PIP (which goes up to $250k for catastrophic injuries).
Mandatory $5k PD coverage.
Optional $10k coverage for third-party bodily injury claims. If this option is not chosen, the "basic" policy will also not provide legal representation.
All people on Basic policies are subject to verbal threshold for their bodily injury claims.
No UM/UIM. coverage.
Comprehensive and collision coverage is permitted on these policies. NJ Coalition of Health Care v. Department of Banking and Insurance, 323 N.J. Super. 207, 254-258 (App. Div.), certif. den. 162 N.J. 485 (1999)
